The Society for News Design is now accepting applications for its latest program: SND Experience.

Leveraging the expertise of our international design community, SNDExp is a hands-on, experiential program created to bolster storytelling and support problem solving at NGOs, non-profits, open-source projects, and academic institutions. Together, our team will work with yours to create a customized event designed to help you go an inch wide and a mile deep toward solving a tightly defined problem or exploring a new idea.

We can help facilitate a design sprint, lend expertise on mobile design, point you toward multimedia storytelling tools, or whatever else you might need in promoting the role of design and storytelling at your organization or for your project. Design managers, community organizers, and student media advisers are just some of those who might benefit from bringing SNDExp to their organization. If you have a compelling problem that needs solved, and think our community can help, we’d love to hear from you!

The mission of the Society for News Design is to invent, make, promote, and teach the world’s best visual journalism. Rooted in that mission is the belief that collaborative problem solving with individuals from varied backgrounds will spur new ideas based on empathy and shared human experiences. In a world that’s becoming increasingly visual, we believe that beautiful, functional design must be accessible to everyone — regardless of organizational size or budget.

For the first EXP event, the Society collaborated with the Trust Project in New York City to execute a two-day design sprint that delivered prototypes in response to the challenge question, “How might we help people who consume journalism gain more trust in the news?” The sprint leaned on user interviews and primary research previously conducted by the Trust Project.

SNDExp is made possible by generous funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and is free of charge to participating organizations.

Applications are accepted on a continuous basis, and programs will be held from now until December 2016. For more information, contact Kyle Ellis, the Society’s Director of Strategic Programs at kyle@snd.org.
