Imagine traveling from newsrooms around the world as a graphic designer for 15 years. What lessons would you learn? What skills would you think would be the most important? What would make you a better infographic designer?

Do you have to always do what is trendy?

Marco Hernandez did just that, with his family along for the ride. He worked in newsrooms in Costa Rica, Hong Kong and Singapore for more than 15 years as a graphic designer. And now he is sharing his five most important lessons from his time traveling the world.

Recently named World’s Best Digital Designer in 2022 at the SND Creative Competition, Marco will be presenting at SND’s Designing Success 1-day workshop on Oct 22, 2022 in Washington, DC.

His session:

5 sticky notes from an Infographic Designer

How important is it to be able to code for a graphics designer, how to deal with frustration and failure and how to find ideas for stories. That among other things that I have learned in media newsrooms around the world and that can make a difference for any infographic designer.

Marco is a Graphics Editor at The New York Times. Prior NYT, he was Data Visualization Developer at Reuters, Singapore. Also former Director of Digital Design at the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. He has also worked as Senior Infographic Designer at La Nación in Costa Rica and as Lecturer of Information Design at the Science and Arts University of Costa Rica.

Marco has conducted lectures in the major Universities in Costa Rica: The University of Costa Rica(UCR), The National University of Costa Rica(UNA), and The Technological Institute of Costa Rica(TEC). In Hong Kong he held lectures and exhibitions at leading Universities such as the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Hong Kong Institute of Design and the University of Hong Kong. (full bio)
