Join us for "SND Prototypes: The story experience"

Society for News Design

How can we work across disciplines to keep audiences consuming our content? In other words, how can we better design the story form?

The Society For News Design would love for you to join us for two days of focused ideation and prototyping. We’ll begin Friday morning, March 21 and wrap-up around noon on Sunday, March 23. This is an invitation-only event.

We’re geeking out over questions like:

  • “What would a behavior-focused story form look like?”
  • “How can we tell stories on mobile that have heavily data-driven interfaces?”
  • “How can we better better take advantage of device capabilities to enhance understanding of complicated stories?”
  • “How can we improve the story-consumption experience that desperately needs to be put into context?”
  • “How might we use technology in our story presentations to enhance and deepen understanding of the story?”
  • Many more questions, just like these!

Sure, you’ve heard of events like this before, but we think ours is a little bit different!

  • This event is about community, not competition. We’ll ask  participants to spend 5-7 minutes sharing expertise or posing a question, and then we’ll design and develop possibilities. Participants will have the chance to pitch specific problems they’d most like to solve around the story experience, teams will be formed across products or publications, and our prototypes will all be open source.
  • We’re hosting our event concurrently with the Society For News Design’s best of digital design competition. Throughout the weekend, judges from publications and products around the world will share insights with participants into trends they observe in pieces of the world’s best visual journalism.
  • We’re bringing together some of the brightest minds from agencies, news organizations, news products and the open-source community alike. We want a diversity of expertise from professionals who work inside and outside of newsroom walls.
  • We’re starting an on-going conversation about the biggest issues in digital news design, and creating solutions that will inform an industry. We’ll leave Indianapolis with a clear set of next steps to build on the momentum created together.

We encourage you to RSVP as soon as possible by following this link(Do not complete this form unless you plan to attend.)
For your convenience, we’ve reserved a small block of rooms at the Omni Severin hotel in downtown Indianapolis, just two blocks from the event site, the Ball State University Indianapolis Center. This is a high-volume weekend for Indianapolis hotels, so we encourage you to make your arrangements sooner rather than later.
If you’re curious, a finalized agenda will be published a week before the event date, and we’ll publish summaries of the ideas immediately after the event.
