Breakfast brainstorming led to lunch time libations and afternoon action plans at #SNDMakes on Friday.
Coming into the weekend, our group of designers, developers, journalists and product managers knew the focus would be on answering the question, “How might we improve the content-creation experience,” but we had no idea what path that question would lead us down.
After quick introductions, we started diving into the different subsets of our question like, “How might we make audio content more shareable?” And, “How might the CMS train better journalists?”

By the end of our brainstorming, we had over four dozen potential questions to fuel six teams.
But before work, lunch!
With 19 different organizations represented, and participants with a variety of backgrounds, it only made sense to add a knowledge-sharing component to the schedule. Amanda Krauss (Texas Tribune), Chris Plummer (Dockyard), Miranda Mulligan (Knight Lab) and Dheerja Kaur, Kamal Grey, and Stephen Clancy (ESPN) talked about work projects, storytelling tools and the history of video games.

By the end of the afternoon, our teams landed on “How might we” questions that will fuel the prototypes we hope to see tomorrow!
“How might we make authors and editors stewards of their readers’ next click?”
“How might we help newsrooms identify and verify information from social media about breaking news events?”
“How might we visualize an outline over an audio file?”
“How might we help content creators visualize what platform their content will be represented on and how it will be represented?”
“How might we make designing complex pages easier and more accessible in a visual way?”
“How might we bring a unique perspective to a story in order to better reach our target audiences?”
Teams are using Hackdash to document their progress, and Lisa Williams created great documentation of all the discussion that took place throughout day one.
