Designer.
Educator.
Mentor.
Journalist.
Innovator.
Colleague.
Friend.
These are just a sample of the terms those who have met Matt Mansfield have used to describe him.
Matt has been a champion for nonpartisan reporting, innovative design and has influenced the design of news experiences for many years, both in his own creative work and as a professor, mentor and coach to a generation of practitioners.
He has shown his dedication to the visual storytelling community through his longstanding service to the Society for News Design as a member of SND’s leadership, co-chair of three annual workshops and a judge for SND’s Creative Competition.
On March 2, 2020, SND announced that Matt was to receive SND’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his service to SND and his exemplary and impactful work in news design. Just days later, SND postponed their annual workshop and awards gala, where the organization was to celebrate Matt’s career, because of the global pandemic.
After nearly two and a half years of virtual events, SND is gathering in Washington, DC to celebrate our 2020 Lifetime Achievement Winner and other award recipients at SND Honors on Oct. 21, 2022.
About the Award
The Lifetime Achievement Award, the Society’s highest individual honor, is presented for a significant body of work that has had a lasting influence on the field of journalism; extraordinary service to SND and its members; or a combination of both. The SND Lifetime Achievement Award was first bestowed upon visual journalism pioneer Mario Garcia in 1993. All previous honorees and their citations can be found here.
