Mike Rice, features design director of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, has been named print competition coordinator for the 36th annual Best of News Design Creative Competition, to be held in February 2015 in Syracuse, N.Y., on the campus of Syracuse University.
Rice was appointed by SND’s print competition committee earlier this summer. He will serve as the first repeat coordinator in Syracuse, having previously led SND31 in February 2010. He will succeed Colin Smith, who is serving as SND35 coordinator. Rice, previously of the Arizona Daily Star and the Times of Northwest Indiana, is an accomplished designer, artist and editor and has been either a facilitator, judge or coordinator at SND’s print competitions annually since 2006.
Potential SND36 judges may be nominated by members using the form at the bottom of this page. Judges will be chosen by the competition committee, led by Rice, and contacted early this fall.

Work on the Call For Entries for SND36 has begun, and while no categories will be added this year, the print/multimedia combination category, introduced last year, will be refined and expanded to provide more and clearer entry options. The Call is expected to be available in mid-October.
Competition committee: SND’s print competition committee consists of society members Melissa Angle, Vince Chiaramonte, Josh Crutchmer, Tiffany Grandstaff, Gayle Grin, Becky Pendergast, Mike Rice, Colin Smith, Dennis Varney and Michael Whitley, in conjunction with the SND executive board and executive director. Questions or concerns for the committee can be addressed to bestofnewsdesign@gmail.com.
