We’re happy to announce that Julie Elman has agreed to take on the role of print publications director for the Society. Julie is a tremendous talent, with a fine eye for visual storytelling, and an even finer ear for the kinds of stories that will have resonance and meaning for our members.
For those of you unfamiliar with Julie’s background, here’s her official bio:
Julie M. Elman is an associate professor at the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University, where she teaches courses in publication design. Before heading to OU in 2005, she worked at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va., where for most of her 10 years there, she designed the front page. She has won numerous SND awards for her page designs. Julie first started out in the newspaper industry working as a photojournalist for dailies in West Virginia and Tennessee. She has also picture edited for a group of weeklies in and around the Boston area. She taught photojournalism at the University of Missouri in Columbia for one year, and for five years taught design at Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach as an adjunct instructor.
In 2008, Elman designed the New York Times best-selling photography book The Rise of Barack Obama for Pete Souza, who is now chief White House photographer. In 2012, she redesigned and updated Tim Harrower’s The Newspaper Designer’s Handbook, 7th edition. Julie is the creator of the Fear Project, an illustrative chronicle of other people’s fears.
She’ll be working closely with the digital publications team led by Kyle Ellis and Katie Myrick to create a synergy between our print publications and the reinvigorated snd.org.
Julie will be reaching out to members to contribute to Design magazine. To get her started, feel free to send your thoughts and ideas.
Of course, you can get a first-hand taste of Julie’s creative energy when you attend her session at SND Louisville.
