Earlier this month, UK students interested in journalism and design gathered to learn from professionals at The Sunday Times at a workshop hosted by SND.
“It was extremely rewarding to work with students who approached the session with great gusto and produced such vibrant ideas,” said Russel Herneman, the art director of The Sunday Times who helped lead the workshop. “We enjoyed doing our bit to encourage the next generation of news designers.”
Students gathered at the Google headquarters in London to first learn about the 200-year history of The Sunday Times. Then, the group was given the opportunity to test out their own design skills. Working with industry professionals from The Sunday Times, the students chose a story to design, sketched out their ideas and got their finished page out by the 5 p.m. deadline. All of the students’ pages were then displayed on a screen, and they received feedback.
