Simon Scarr was selected by a panel of 20 judges as the World’s Best Designer for his art direction portfolio from Reuters in the Society for News Design’s 44th edition creative competition, the Best of Digital News Design. This is the third year that a designer has been recognized as World’s Best. SND has awarded websites, apps, overall experiences and organizations the World’s Best-Designed™ Digital News Experience distinction since 2010.
Judges praised the wide range of work in his portfolio: “This body of work is exceptional in so many ways — from attention to detail on tight deadlines, to masterful execution of visual storytelling on projects and art direction. Each piece stands out as a wonderful story that delights, engages and presents so beautifully.”
Another judge wrote, “A range showcasing world-class visual storytelling gives the impression of an expert in his field. The craftmanship is used to perfection, with an eye for the important details, and always serve the story. Some of these stories were my favorites in the competition.”
Simon’s portfolio included pieces on topics such as the collapse of insects, how big the Tonga eruption was along with the lightning storm from the eruption, North Korea’s missile program and the Halloween crowd crush in Seoul.
Judges also noted the impeccable attention to detail, “Simon’s portfolio shows both an incredible range and an incredibly high standard of execution. He has shaped and contributed to some of the most powerful and groundbreaking visual journalism of the past year. We talk a lot about the importance of seemingly small details (which end up being quite important to the overall story and experience) — Simon is someone who clearly works to make sure every detail of a project is intentional.”
