The Call for Entries for the 35th annual Best of News Design Creative Competition is now available in pdf form, along with editable Entry and Tally & Payment forms. Check back for translations into Spanish and other languages coming soon.
The entry deadline is Jan. 15, 2014, for U.S. entries, and Jan. 22 for international entries. Judging will take place Feb. 7-11 at Syracuse University.
I asked competition committee member Josh Crutchmer for a quick overview of the changes you’ll see this year:
“The most significant change is the addition of Category 20: Combination Print and Digital Presentation. This category is the first time SND has opened the print design competition to multimedia entries. Certainly it reflects the current state of journalism, but more importantly, it acknowledges the best work in visual journalism should be recognized based on its content without format limitations. Category 20 intends to recognize depth of presentation, collaboration and consistency across platforms. Its initial breakdown is news, features and sports. Entering requires that the multimedia portions of the presentation are accessible online during the judging and for the ensuing 60 days.
“Another notable change for SND35 is a breakdown of inside pages by category in the major page design categories: 3 and 7. In past years, “inside” pages have been thrown into catchall categories where a page on a natural disaster may have been judged next to a page previewing a sporting event. This year’s modifications address that issue and the competition committee hopes we have created new opportunities for organizations to enter inside page categories.
“Long-time entrants will also notice modifications to the graphics and illustration categories in the name of fairness in entering and judging. The Call For Entries explains every category in detail.”
