Vision for SND

The SND has been a key reference for me to discover excellence in journalistic work related to infographics, visual articles, and innovation in these fields over the years. From this perspective, I would like to help ensure that it remains so for the new generations of designers, especially in my area of expertise, which is infographics and data visualization.

I believe it is crucial for the SND to be a meeting point for professionals, both physically and virtually. But it should also reach out more to students of design, journalism, programming, and similar fields, to help them discover how to specialize in the various areas of news design. I want to emphasize students because they often don’t learn about these career paths until they are already in the workforce. It would be valuable to bring our profession to future generations through talks and other outreach initiatives at universities.

I believe the awards, as they are currently run, should continue, as they are a way to measure and showcase the state of news design to the world. However, we could also try to create more local branches in different parts of the world to make it more globally accessible. Furthermore, I think it could be very interesting for the SND to participate in other international conferences that are not specifically journalistic, such as Siggraph, Ars Electronica, or OFFF/Sonar Barcelona. These are leading festivals for visual innovation, and they serve as a reference for many professionals in our sector in terms of innovation, design, and creative coding for our projects. This kind of multidisciplinary cross-pollination could yield very interesting results.

About Rocio

I joined the SCMP as a Senior Infographics Designer in 2023, bringing with me over a decade of experience from Spain, where I worked with the Graphics Team at El Confidencial and as a freelancer.

My academic background includes a Degree in Arts and Design, a Master’s Degree in Digital Arts, and a Master’s Degree in Visual Tools to Empower Citizens.

In my role at the SCMP, my work involves in-depth research for visual stories, which I then bring to life through data analysis, storytelling design, and the creation of both static and interactive infographics. I have a particular interest in cartography, creative coding, and the intersection of art and information design.
