Vision for SND

My vision for SND is directly correlated from what the organization has done for me. When I first joined as a student volunteer, I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to take in my life or career. Through volunteering at the Creative Competition, I have been given the chance to work alongside industry leaders, contribute to meaningful projects, and see firsthand what design excellence looks like. Those experiences have provided me clarity, inspiration, direction, and confidence- ultimately helping me to land a remarkable internship. That transformation, from uncertainty to purpose, is what inspires my vision for SND.

SND is a powerful conduit for attracting young, talented designers into the field. By expanding student chapters, building stronger mentorship pipelines, and creating more opportunities for students to connect with professionals, I believe SND can continue to shape careers and open doors. The future of SND is about not only celebrating excellence in design, but also actively contributing to the development of the next generation of storytellers. I am eager to share my passion and experience in order to extend the reach of SND and I look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with the vast expertise of the SND Board of Directors.

About Andrew

I am a fourth-year journalism student at Michigan State University with a concentration in Media Design, combining strong storytelling skills with an eye for typographic styling, visual communication, and digital publishing. My professional expertise thus far has focused on newspaper design, branding, and type focused projects, including an internship with Roger Black and Type Network. Focal points of the internship include writing and designing articles and creating social media posts for the Type Network website as well as being a key contributor to the rebranding and redesign of The Big Bend Sentinel in Marfa, Texas. My experience with Type Network and The Big Bend Sentinel have provided invaluable experience in the world of journalism and have strengthened my attention to detail within design.

I have been actively involved with Society for News Design for three years and this will be my third opportunity as a volunteer at the annual Creative Competition. At the competition, I have engaged in roles including media desk support, social media content, and judge interviews. Through being involved with SND, I have built invaluable connections with industry leaders and strengthened my expertise in design, outreach, and communication. I am passionate about combining storytelling and design and I bring creativity, precision, and care to every project I take on. At Michigan State, I am a very active member of our school’s student chapter of SND, where I regularly attend meetings and help expand the reach of Society for News Design.
