Vision for SND
Newsrooms who understand and uphold the value of design in their storytelling are better equipped to confront the challenges facing the media industry today. As news designers, we understand this, but journalism is a collaborative effort and design literacy is not held equally among our peers. SND can be a resource not only for its members but for the journalists, producers and editors they work with as well. The organisation holds a wealth of knowledge and talent and we have a great opportunity to share it. I believe it’s also important to consider how we engage and support younger and early-career news designers, as well as those who come from non-traditional news or design backgrounds.
About Alex
Alex Lim is a designer-developer and graphics journalist at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). In his role on the Climate team, he draws on a wide range of visual formats to explain often complex topics in accessible and engaging ways. He is especially interested in presenting familiar topics in new lights.
As a younger designer, he represents a rising generation of leaders in the field of news design and is unafraid to experiment with visual storytelling techniques. His career has taken him from newsrooms including The Straits Times, Stuff.co.nz and The New York Times. Among other recognition, he has received from SND one gold medal, two bronze medals and 11 awards of excellence for his body of work including visualising the colours of Singapore and analysing the hairstyles of Australian football.
He holds a B.S. in Computer Science and Design from Boston’s Northeastern University and found his way into journalism through an interest in data visualization. Alex grew up in New York and in 2021 moved to Melbourne where he enjoys the city’s coffee culture and local ice hockey community.
