Here are six influential design leaders you will see at the workshop this fall:
Haika Hinze is the art director of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit, one of Gemany’s most successful broadsheets, renowned for its ambitious and independent journalism. In 2013, the newspaper received several premium design awards, including World’s Best-Designed Newspaper recognition from SND. In 1998, Haika assisted Die Zeit‘s relaunch with Mario Garcia. Since 2005 she has been responsible for the look of the newspaper and its iPad edition.
Anja Horn is the creative director and managing director of Unicorn Solutions, which she founded in 2007. Anja advises national and international publishing houses and companies and, with her team, develops prototypes for cross-media brand communication. Previously, she was creative director and deputy managing director of Kircher Burkhardt GmbH and art director of the daily newspaper Die Welt, which in 1999 earned the European Newspaper Award and, in 2000, was an SND World’s Best-Designed Newspaper.
Veronika Illmer has been in charge of art direction at Bild and Bild am Sonntag since 2001. After studying at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, she designed the weekly newspaper Der Falter, as well as numerous books, exhibition catalogs and posters at her own studio, Illmer&Dempf. In 1995 she moved to Hamburg, where she was art director of Prinz, TV Movie, and Welt am Sonntag. For Axel Springer, she also developed projects in Paris and Warsaw. She has lived in Berlin since 2008.
Jan-Eric Peters is editor in chief of all Welt titles. He developed and introduced the tabloid Welt Kompakt and, according to the World Association of Newspapers, is the inventor of the integrated newsroom. Jan-Eric is Marshall-Memorial-Fellow of the German Marshall Fund of the United States and belongs to the Young Global Leader Forum of the World Economic Forum.
Frank Schmiechen began his journalistic career in 1988 as a freelance writer in Hamburg. After one year at the sports desk of Bergedorfer Zeitung, he moved to the editorial department of Bild Zeitung, where he held the position of chief producer since 1994 and later accounted for design and production of the national Bild edition as managing editor. In 2001 he became art director and member of the chief editorship of Welt and Berliner Morgenpost in Berlin. In 2004, he was involved in the development of the tabloid Welt Kompakt and became its vice chief editor. Since February 2010, he has worked in the chief editorship of the Welt Group and was responsible for Welt am Sonntag for three years. Since January 2014 he has been responsible for the digital products of the Welt Group.
Gabi Schmidt is the creative director at Schmidt Media Group. Gabi loves new challenges, foreign countries and cultures. She worked as design editor for Khaleej Times in Dubai, HT Media in New Delhi, El Universal in Mexico City as well as the San Jose Mercury News and Detroit Free Press in the U.S. Recently, Gabi has been focusing on digital magazine projects.
