So while LeBron was deciding to take his talents back to Ohio, there was this thing called the World Cup going on. We don’t know yet what the global viewership was, but Sunday’s final was the most watched soccer game ever in the U.S. and was perhaps seen by a billion people worldwide.
Let’s take a quick look at some of the inspired work. Last Tuesday, July 8, in the semifinal Germany wiped out host nation Brazil in historic fashion, 7-1. Diario de Santa Maria, published in Santa Maria, Brazil, led with a headline “Brazilians could not believe what they were witnessing… The dream of erasing the ghosts of 1950 and winning the Cup at home transformed into nightmare”:
And a blackout cover from Metro, published in Porto Alegre, Brazil:
The Times of Oman previewed Sunday’s final with a section featuring 3-D photos (glasses included) and a pop-up of the Maracana Stadium in Rio:
The reaction from German newspapers after the 1-0 final win over Argentina, starting with Berliner Morgenpost, whose headline reads “We’ll see you in Berlin”:
The front of Die Welt, in Hamburg, proclaims “It’s True”:
Rheinische Post, based in Dusseldorf in western Germany, says “You are heroes!”:
And on the other side, the front of La Nacion in Buenos Aires led with a headline that reads “Without the Cup, but with pride”:
Finally, the Times of Oman came back with a parting shot today, looking ahead to the 2018 final in Russia (perhaps to be upstaged by LeBron’s next decision):
