Position: Website Design Intern
Duration: September-November (10-week Internship)
Location: Remote
Schedule: 20 hrs per week for 10 weeks

About the Internship
We are seeking a motivated and passionate Website Design Intern to join our team and work on a comprehensive website development project. This internship will provide hands-on experience in various stages of website development, including discovery, design, migration, and testing. You will collaborate with our team to help audit, design, and improve the user experience of our website, while gaining exposure to the latest web technologies and best practices.
Schedule
20 hrs per week for 10 weeks
September — Discovery & Planning, Design
• Audit current website structure and content
• Define user requirements and goals for the new website
• Set up development environment and tools
• Develop visual style guide for the website
• Create core block patterns and component library
• Design key page templates and navigation structure
• Review and refine the design direction
October — Migration
• Rebuild high-priority pages based on new design and functionality
• Migrate and restructure existing content
• Create content page templates and reusable blocks
• Build specialized component blocks for unique content types
November— Testing and Refinement
• Conduct cross-browser and device testing to ensure compatibility
• Perform accessibility compliance checks to meet WCAG standards
• Optimize website performance and loading speeds
• Make final adjustments based on feedback and user testing
Qualifications and requirements

- Must be based in and have the right to work in the United States. (We hope to open the internship to the rest of the world in the future.)
- Current enrollment in a degree program related to web development, graphic design, journalism, digital storytelling or relevant experience. (But we will also consider applicants who need more experience because they are potentially seeking a career change or are new/emerging professionals.)
- Basic knowledge of web development technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.)
- Familiarity with content management systems (WordPress, etc.) or web design tools.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Good communication skills and a proactive approach to tasks.
- Previous experience with web design or development (through coursework, personal projects, or internships) is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the audit and analysis of the current website’s content and structure.
- Contribute to the design process by developing visual guides and templates.
- Work with developers to rebuild and migrate key website pages.
- Help ensure that the website complies with accessibility standards and is optimized for performance.
- Provide input and feedback during testing phases to ensure the website is user-friendly and efficient.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to brainstorming sessions.
