Apply for the 2027 Board of Directors
The Society for News Design is evolving—and we invite you to help lead the way. This fall, SND members will elect four Directors-at-Large to serve two-year terms beginning January 1, 2027.
Why serve on the Board?
Board service is an opportunity to support SND’s members, help shape the Society’s future, and advance visual storytelling across journalism, design, and communications.
Directors share responsibility for SND’s strategic direction, financial stewardship, and organizational oversight. They also contribute their experience, ideas, and professional connections to help strengthen the Society.
Priorities and opportunities for the coming term include:
- Modernizing SND’s website, technology, and member experience
- Growing membership, outreach, and engagement
- Exploring AI’s role in visual storytelling and developing informed guidance
- Strengthening SND as a resource for expertise, professional connections, and inspiration
- Exploring training, professional credentials, and certification opportunities
- Supporting the continued development of the Creative Competition and its digital archive
Who can run?
Current SND members are invited to apply. We welcome candidates with varied backgrounds, perspectives, and skills—including visual storytelling, journalism, design, technology, business, finance, and organizational leadership.
Candidates should be ready to participate actively, work collaboratively, and contribute time to SND’s priorities. Your application and a follow-up conversation will help you understand the responsibilities and commitments involved.
What is the time commitment?
Directors typically dedicate two to five hours per week to SND, depending on their responsibilities and projects.
The Board holds at least six remote meetings each year, generally lasting two to three hours. Directors are expected to prepare for and participate in meetings and follow through on agreed responsibilities between meetings.
How do I apply?
Complete the candidate application by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on October 17, 2026.
After you submit your application, we will contact you to discuss board responsibilities, the skills you would bring, and the time and resource commitments involved, and to answer your questions.

There are other ways to contribute. SND welcomes volunteers with experience and interests across journalism, design, communications, technology, and organizational operations. Let us know in the Slack channel if you would like to explore opportunities to get involved.
Thank you for considering how you can help shape SND’s future.
