Dr. Mario R. García is Senior Adviser on News Design and Adjunct Professor at Columbia University’s School of Journalism. He is also CEO/Founder of García Media, a global consulting firm. He has been involved with the redesign and rethinking of more than 750 publications in 120 countries, including The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. He came to the School of Journalism as the Hearst Digital Media Professional in Residence in 2013. He is the author of 15 books and continues to work with newsrooms across the world. He has been involved with The Poynter Institute’s EyeTrack Research since its start, including the EyeTrack: Tablet. His awards include a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for News Design, The Journalism Medal of Honor from the University of Missouri for Distinguished Service in Journalism. In 2015, Mario became the recipient of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Charles O’Malley Excellence in Teaching Award. People Magazine mentioned him among the 100 most influential Hispanics in the United States. He received his PhD from the University of Miami. Today, Mario is totally engaged in mobile-first storytelling and artificial intelligence, and the transformation of news and information across digital platforms.

Dr. Mario García is CEO/Founder of García Media, a global consulting firm. He is also Senior Adviser for News Design and Adjunct Professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
He is known worldwide as one of the premier media designers. He has been involved with the redesign and rethinking of more than 750 publications in 120 countries, including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, South China Morning Post (Hong Kong), New Straits Times (Malaysia), Aftenposten (Norway), Die Zeit and Handelsblatt (Germany), all the McClatchy newspapers in the US, 8 Postmedia newspapers in Canada, Goteborgs Posten (Sweden), Il Secolo XIX (Italy), The Hindú and the Hindustantimes (India), the Khaleej Times (UAE), and The Citizen (South Africa).
His corporate clients include Facebook, Walmart, the United Nations, Hapag Lloyd, and Jet Blue Airlines.
He is the author of 15 books about news, design, and media. He wrote “The Story,” a trilogy about mobile storytelling – the first book was specifically written and designed to be consumed on mobile devices. The trilogy is divided into Transformation, Storytelling, and Design. In 2024 he wrote “AI: The Next Revolution in Content Creation,” available through the publisher.
Dr. García founded the Graphics & Design program at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, where he serves as a member of the Poynter Foundation. He has been involved with the Institute’s EyeTrack studies since the 1980s, including the most recent EyeTrack for the Tablet in 2012.
His academic career includes full professor at both Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications and the University of South Florida’s Department of Mass Communications. He joined Columbia University in 2013 as the Hearst Digital Media Professor in Residence.
Dr. García has received over 300 Society for News Design awards including the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. People Magazine selected Dr. García among the 100 Most Influential Hispanics. The University of Missouri awarded him its Medal of Honor in Journalism.
Dr. García received a PhD from the University of Miami in 1976.
