SND Officer Candidates for 2020

  • December 30, 2019
Society for News Design

We’re pleased to introduce you to this year’s candidates for the 2020 SND offices. Voting is open to all SND members and will begin on Monday, Dec. 30, and continue through Friday, Jan. 10. Election results will be announced on Monday, Jan. 13.

Under its bylaws, the Society operates a leadership “ladder” where the Secretary/Treasurer is automatically nominated to be Vice President and the Vice President to be President. The organization’s immediate past president, Tyson Evans, was responsible for organizing this election. Each office is uncontested this year but there is a write-in option for each role.

Candidate bios are below.

HOW THE ELECTION WILL PLAY OUT

How and who votes: The election is conducted electronically (SND members will receive an email). Voting is open to all members. Election results are tallied by a third-party administrator, Election Buddy.

Lapsed or non-members can renew or join before the ballot is issued in order to vote. Renew your membership here.

President: Aly Morris

Aly Morris is an award-winning features designer at Tribune’s Design and Production Studio. Her portfolio has won both digital and print awards and she was honored to help judge the SND 37 competition. She has worked on print and digital sides of newsrooms across the country and previously led a team of designers at RedEye — a Chicago Tribune publication aimed at millennials — before being asked to join the Chicago Tribune’s long-standing features desk.

Her previous experience has highlighted some of the problems that many young professionals deal with. She’s hoping through a board position she can help them navigate through the real life newsroom experience while continuing to unlock their personal creative potential.

When Aly isn’t designing section fronts, you can find her teaching a community yoga class, rearranging her indoor plant jungle at her apartment or plotting her travel arrangements for the next SND conference.

Vice President: Cristóbal Edwards

Cristóbal Edwards teaches reporting, writing, visuals, and news design to master and undergraduate journalism and design students at Universidad Católica de Chile. He has given presentations and workshops about those topics in China, Latin America, Scandinavia, and the USA.

He is the Society for New Design’s secretary/treasurer and is part of the Executive Board. He became an SND member in 1999 and has been appointed to several board positions: co-director of the education committee in 2001, Region 12 (South America) director in 2004, SND Foundation in 2008, and international relations director in 2014.

Cris was TIME magazine’s news correspondent in Chile for nine years until late 2007. He has also freelanced as a writer and photographer for several Chilean, North American and UK media. As a photographer, he has exhibited documentary photography in Chile, England, and Norway.
He graduated with a Master of Science in Journalism from Northwestern University University in 1998. He enjoys traveling, scuba diving, photography, design, writing. He speaks several languages.

He says: I am once more a candidate for an elected position –this time for the vice presidency– because I want to continue to serve you, members of our Society: professionals, students, faculty, and others. In particular, I want to do the following next year:

  • Seek ways to strengthen SND members’ commitment and participation.
  • Help merge the Society and the Foundation to give SND new life in today’s media and other forms of news design.
  • Include in SND underrepresented cultural, ethnic, national, and diverse groups of people.
  • Promote joint projects between SND members from different regions or programs around the world, such as the ÑH Awards, European summits, and workshops in Asia.

A favor: I hope you vote in the coming election. We all need — and benefit from — your participation in this, our visual journalism collaborative enterprise.

Secretary/Treasurer: Joe Greco

Joe Greco joined Tribune Publishing’s Design and Production Studio in March 2019 as manager of print production, overseeing the two sports design teams and the editing team. Before that, he worked for 11 years at GateHouse Media where he’s worn a few hats, most recently as director of creative development. In that role, he led design training sessions for the CND’s nearly 200 designers in Austin, Texas, that produced 300 publications every week. He also worked with publishers and editors on developing new products and launched a Mario Garcia redesign for all GateHouse publications.

His first newspaper job actually was in construction — he helped pour the cement foundation for the Times of Northwest Indiana’s presses, where he later worked as an editorial assistant and designer. He spent five years at The Detroit News as a copy editor and designer, and several years as creative director at The Post-Tribune in Merrillville, Indiana. Yes, he’s a midwestern boy from Northwest Indiana. A graduate of Purdue University, he enjoys riding and working on motorcycles — he recently restored a 1967 Puch motorcycle with much help from great friends. Oh, and he can’t stand writing about himself in third person.
