#SNDMakes teams define projects, begin work

Society for News Design

Our first #SNDMakes designathon kicked off with a bang yesterday, as our talented group of news design nerds are taking on ambitious “new storyform” project ideas. Day one included time for participants to ideate and brainstorm, define their design challenges, and setting team work plans to move their ideas from concept to prototype.

The four teams set the following design challenges for themselves:

  • How might we create a mobile experience that makes long form content easily scannable?
  • How might we design video experiences that allow for variable time commitments?
  • How might we better surface social sharing within a story to give newsrooms powerful social insights and readers more connection to the story and their Twitter community?
  • How might we encourage discovery from different entry points in a story timeline?

Some of the designers shared their passions through five lightning talks on subjects ranging from project management, to designing through user-testing, to presenting a light-weight CMS tool that the Chicago Tribune’s graphics desk uses called Tarbell (by TribApps, and NPRviz uses something similar), to sketching with Meteor.js.
