Ugly designs you have to love. Saving print with type. Following eyeballs, literally. Design through obstruction.
The 2014 SND Frankfurt workshop is all about ideas and insights. Here are some more topics our speakers will bring:

Evolution of design at The Washington Post: Until five years ago, The Washington Post was a sleeping giant in design. At the core of the evolution since is a spirit of collaboration between print/digital design, photo and graphics. Our mantra is “Be Bold” and that takes exciting new forms in print and digitally every day. These changes didn’t happen overnight, though. We’ll examine how to turn print designers into cross-platform designers, pitfalls to avoid and how to constantly change your goals.
Anja Horn
From Britpop to German symphony: How The Standard in Nairobi reinvented itself: Thanks to a growing middle class, the printed paper still makes money in Kenya. With their relaunch, The Standard wants to change the reading habits of their countrymen. Anja Horn shows how she and her team rejuvenated the oldest East African newspaper – and to tackle their mission: “Start the German engine!”
Sarah Sampsel
The Rethink of The Washington Post: The Washington Post opened a design and development studio in New York City to focus on rethinking their digital platform. But what does that mean and why is it in NYC? Sarah will speak about the process of building a team and a strategy, what they have accomplished thus far, lessons learned and the design process needed to drive a major effort.
Koos Staal
Who wants yesterday’s papers? Nobody in the world?: There are predictions about an imminent death of the printed newspaper (often seen as a relic of ancient times) as it is crowded out by digital news media. A mummy, ripe for a museum. Worldwide, the circulation of daily papers has been in decline for years. If we want the printed paper to survive, new approaches and ideas are needed. First of all we, should be more conscious of the practical aspects of this marvelous medium. Designer Koos Staal (NL) shows some new approaches and 99 reasons why we cannot go without printed papers in our lives.
Ted Irvine
