Date: September 29, 2020

It’s no secret that the culture of newsrooms across the country need an overhaul. To attract and retain diverse talent, newsrooms need to be a place of growth and collaboration, but they also need to be a place where journalists feel safe, respected and appreciated. Because of the current landscape of the industry, early-career journalists often feel pigeonholed into taking the first position they are offered without realizing that accepting a job means accepting the newsroom it lives in. Newsrooms with corrupt culture bleed talent, and it is not uncommon for those people to leave the industry at large. We’ll explore different traits of newsroom culture — from practices that might dissuade you to those that might attract you. By the end of this session, you’ll be able to explore what makes an ideal newsroom for you. You might also pick up some tips and tricks that you can implement to make a work environment just a little bit better (for you and your colleagues!).
